The 16th ECerS Conference for Young Scientists in Ceramics will be organised by the Department of Materials Engineering, Faculty of Technology Novi Sad, University of Novi Sad from 15th to 18 October 2025

The main goals of this traditional meeting are the promotion of the work by young researchers and closer international contacts between students from different universities and institutes, through exchange of knowledge, ideas and experience in the field of ceramics.

The authors of all presented papers are students (primarily focused on master and Ph.D. students, but there is no limitation on categories and age of the participants).

The Chair of Structural and Functional Ceramics (ISFK) in Leoben is a renowned institution known for its expertise in the mechanical testing of ceramic materials and components. Its research scope includes material and component testing, processing of ceramics, simulation of mechanical loads and functional properties, damage analysis and fractography, fracture statistics, and lifetime prediction. Main topics/techniques developped in the Institute/University/Company : Mechanical testing of ceramic components in different sizes and shapes. A prominent examle of developed testing methods by ISFK is the ball-on-three-balls test (B3B) Main equipments available in the Institute/University/Company : Mechanical testing machines (strength, hardness, fracture toughness, etc.), ceramography, spark plasma sintering (SPS), cold sintering machine (CSP), tape casting, stereolithography 3D printing, SEM, electrical characterization (micro four point probe measurement) The institute has recently focused on ceramic processing using CSP and SPS. A custom-designed CSP press has been developed, enabling new advancements in CSP. Moreover, 3D printing and sintering of complex-shaped ceramics are among the main research topics. Experimental work is consistently guided by simulation studies, such as finite fracture mechanics and phase-field modeling, to understand crack initiation and propagation under various loading and processing conditions.

The SEM is capable of obtaining 3D-like images of the surfaces of a wide range of materials. It is possible to examine many characteristics of the sample (surface topography, crystallography, chemical composition, etc.). The SEM equipment is a JEOL Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (JSM-7800F) with a maximal resolution of 0.8 nm, an acceleration voltage of 0.01 – 30 kV, and a magnification range of x25 – x1000000. It is equipped with the following detectors: • Lower secondary electron detector (LED) • Upper secondary electron detector (UED) • Backscattered electron detector (BED) • Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) detector • Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer X-MaxN 80, Oxford Instruments (EDS). Sample Preparation Equipment • Precision Etching and Coating System (Gatan PECS II Model 685) – with two ion guns for etching solid samples with low-energy Ar+ ions (energy range 0.1 – 8 keV). It can also be used for coating samples with C, Au, Pt/Pd, Cr, and Pt. • Precision Ion Polishing System (Gatan PIPS II Model 695) – with two ion guns for polishing solid samples with low-energy Ar+ ions (energy range 0.1 – 8 keV). Primarily used for sample preparation for scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). • Critical Point Dryer (Quorum K 850) – used for dehydration of biological samples (replaces water with liquid CO2). • Precision Diamond Wire Saw (Well 3242) – stainless steel wire with diamond particles used for cutting various types of samples. It provides smooth and sharp edges. • Precision Diamond Blade Saw (Buehler Iomet 1000) – used for cutting different materials (metals, glass, ceramics, plastics, biomaterials) causing minimal deformation. • Disc Grinder – used for thinning samples. • Dimple Grinder – used for thinning samples to electron transparency suitable for STEM/TEM analysis. The XPS for conducting measurements is a SPECS system that comes with the following additional devices: • FOCUS 500 – X-ray source, • PHOIBOS 100 MCD-5 – 100 mm hemispherical analyzer, • IQE 11/35 – ion gun for low-energy ions of inert and reactive gases (0.3-5 keV), • LN2 - 800oC – precise XYZ manipulator samples holder with controlled heating and cooling, • turbo pump (Pfeiffer) and titanium sublimation pump (Hositrad) for the main chamber, • turbo pump (Pfeiffer) for prechamber, • sealed water-cooling system for the X-ray source and vacuum turbo pumps, • FG 500 – electron gun. Secondary Mass Ion Spectrometry (SIMS) is a microanalytical technique used to determine the composition (isotopic, elemental, and/or molecular) of a specific microvolume of solid material. The SIMS instrument employed for measurements is equipped with a Hidden system.SIMS measurements can be performed in three operating modes: • Static SIMS: measurement of mass spectra of the specimen surface • Dynamic SIMS: depth profiling of selected elements or molecules in the sample • Surface imaging: elemental imaging of the sample surface Contact information: Assoc. The Laboratory of Tribology and Composites is coordinated by Prof. Carlos Alberto Fortulan. The main research projects of the group are related to machine design (for machining, isostatic presses, mills and powder mixers, DLP additive manufacturing, tape casting); simulation of powder compaction using Finite Elements; ceramic manufacturing (additive manufacturing, green machining and surface finishing), bone tissue substitute materials (ceramics and ceramic-ceramic and polymer-ceramic composites); porous ceramics (membranes, artificial rocks) and orthoses (hand, finger, shoulder, hybrid wheelchairs). The group has agreements and extension projects with companies, research institutes and startups. The São Carlos School of Engineering (EESC in Portuguese) was founded in São Carlos, a medium-sized city in São Paulo State, in the second half of the 20th century. The School boosted the technological and educational development of the city and became known as “The Capital of Technology”. Its evolution and development led to the establishment of the other institutes that comprise the São Carlos Campus at the University of São Paulo (USP). The University of São Paulo is the best university in South America acoording to QS World University Rankings. The São Carlos School of Engineering offers 10 undergraduate courses. Main topics/techniques developped in the Institute/University/Company : The Laboratory of Tribology and Composites is coordinated by Prof. Carlos Alberto Fortulan. The main research projects of the group are related to machine design (for machining, isostatic presses, mills and powder mixers, DLP additive manufacturing, tape casting); simulation of powder compaction using Finite Elements; ceramic manufacturing (additive manufacturing, green machining and surface finishing), bone tissue substitute materials (ceramics and ceramic-ceramic and polymer-ceramic composites); porous ceramics (membranes, artificial rocks) and orthoses (hand, finger, shoulder, hybrid wheelchairs). The group has agreements and extension projects with companies, research institutes and startups. The São Carlos School of Engineering (EESC in Portuguese) was founded in São Carlos, a medium-sized city in São Paulo State, in the second half of the 20th century. The School boosted the technological and educational development of the city and became known as “The Capital of Technology”. Its evolution and development led to the establishment of the other institutes that comprise the São Carlos Campus at the University of São Paulo (USP). The University of São Paulo is the best university in South America acoording to QS World University Rankings. The São Carlos School of Engineering offers 10 undergraduate courses. The School also offers 11 graduate programs, including master's and doctorate degrees aiming to train teachers, researchers and specialized professionals. The São Carlos School of Engineering has more than 50 research groups, promoting innovative and creative research focusing on sustainable solutions to meet the challenges presented by contemporary engineering. CERAMATHS is a research unit of UPHF, established in 2021 following the merger of the Materials and Processes (DMP) laboratory, the Mathematics and Their Applications (LAMAV) laboratory, and the Mathematics for Engineers (LMI) laboratory.
