Young Ceramics Networks
2024 YCN Workshop in Tampere
EMC (ECerS Network on Additive Manufacturing) and YCN were partnering to support young researchers in their scientific writing for the 4th YCN Workshop called the ECerS Writing Retreat. The Writing Retreat took place on May 2nd- 5th at Murikanranta Oy in Teisko (Tampere, Finland) prior to yCAM 2024.
The aim of the Writing Retreat was to provide an environment for researchers to develop their dissemination skills and to fully focus on writing their scientific publications. This remote, unfamiliar location was perfect to break away from daily commitments and distractions and kickstart writing projects.
The agenda was composed of more than 65% of pure writing time as well as lectures given by four invited speakers to help young researchers develop their writing skills, optimize their efficiency, and increase their chances of publication. Salla Westerstrand (AI Designer/Ethicist), Prof. Paolo Colombo (Editor-in-Chief of Open Ceramics), Dr Martina Michalikova (Scientific writing trainer) and Dr Camilla Imarisio (Cell Press editor) dedicated their time to the group of young researchers.

A small but active and efficient group of 20 participants from 15 countries created optimal conditions for focused work with fast progress as well as exciting discussions. Networking activities (Sauna, Mölkky and other games) were organized on the evenings to get to know each other and extend each professional network.
A new Special Issue (YCN-EMC) in Open Ceramics has been created in the framework of this ECerS Writing Retreat with a 50% discount for APCs and a best paper award of 1000€. The deadline for submission is 31st October 2024 and YCN/EMC teams are the guest-editors.
Due to a very good feedback from participants, it is clear that this of event should be organized again.

YCN Newsletter 31 - Event Overview - Ceramitec 2026 by YCN Committee member Petar Kotevski
YCN’s participation at ceramitec 2026 in Munich from 24th to 26th of March 2026, represented a key step in strengthening ties between young ceramic professionals, academia, and industry. The exhibition provided an international setting where research, innovation and industrial application converge, enabling meaningful engagements. Our main objective was to position YCN as an active interface connecting early-career professionals with industry leaders.

Interface Engineering: High-Temperature Interactions Between High-Entropy Ceramics and Metals.
My research explores high-temperature interactions between high-entropy ceramics (HECs) and metals, with a focus on joining strategies for extreme environments. By understanding how metals wet and react with these advanced ceramics, I aim to design reliable interfaces for applications such as composites, coatings, and ceramic joining with functional properties. This work contributes to improving the performance and durability of materials used in demanding industries such as energy, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
