YCN Newsletter 32 - Letter from Cristina Ojalvo Guiberteau

Joining the Young Ceramists Network Committee feels especially meaningful to me after serving as the Spanish Representative during 2024–2025. For the past few years, YCN has shown me how powerful a scientific community can be, opening doors to opportunities I never expected, introducing me to inspiring people from different backgrounds, and fostering connections that extend far beyond research and academia.

I currently work as an Assistant Professor at the Higher Technical Engineering School (University of Seville) where my work focuses on advanced ceramic materials, particularly ultra-hard and super-hard refractory ceramics and their processing technologies. My academic journey has not followed a completely linear path. Before redirecting my career towards materials science, I studied architecture, an experience that helped me develop creativity, communication skills, and the ability to work in multidisciplinary environments.

Looking back, this journey taught me that no step in our path is ever truly wasted. Sometimes the experiences that seem distant from our final destination end up giving us the tools, perspective, and confidence that later open unexpected doors. Redirecting my career was certainly a challenge, but it reinforced something I strongly believe in today: we should not be afraid of trying new things or stepping into unfamiliar environments. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Very often, those challenges become the most rewarding experiences both professionally and personally.

One of my main motivations for joining the committee is to help give more visibility to all the work, enthusiasm, and people behind the YCN community. Research can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially at early career stages, and initiatives like YCN remind us how important it is to create spaces where people feel welcomed, motivated, and inspired. Beyond scientific achievements, some of the most valuable outcomes of these networks are the conversations, shared experiences, collaborations, and genuine connections that grow along the way. If my own journey has taught me anything, it is that unexpected opportunities often begin with a simple conversation, a new challenge, or the courage to take a step forward. I hope to help create more of those opportunities within YCN.

Turning Waste into Raw Materials for the Ceramic Industry.

Waste materials were once seen as a burden but are increasingly being redefined as valuable resources for ceramic production. Through advances in materials engineering, waste can be used as secondary raw materials in the ceramic industry. This shift enables more circular and resource-efficient ceramic manufacturing systems.

Implementing 3D-Printed Technical Ceramics in Regulated Medical Fields.

Bringing a new manufacturing technology into medicine requires far more than producing an impressive component. In highly regulated fields, innovation must be translated into repeatable processes, documented quality, reliable materials and, ultimately, evidence of clinical value. Lithoz has spent more than a decade building this bridge for Lithography-based Ceramic Manufacturing (LCM).
