YCN Newsletter 23 - Event reflection - Electroceramics conference, Participant's reflection by Francesco Bertolini
I am Francesco Bertolini, a PhD student from Politecnico di Milano, specializing in the 3D printing of piezoceramic materials using binder jetting technology, with a focus on Potassium Sodium Niobate (KNN). I recently attended the Electroceramics XIX conference, held from August 19th to 22nd, 2024, at Vilnius University in Lithuania.
The conference was a remarkable experience. It offered a mix of high-quality scientific presentations and a stimulating environment. The venue was beautiful, especially the conference halls, which added a unique charm to the event.
During the conference, I presented my work on "Sintering and Piezoelectric Properties of 3D-Printed Potassium Sodium Niobate by Binder Jetting." Presenting in front of such audience was both challenging and rewarding. I appreciated the opportunity to share my research and discuss innovative fabrication methods for piezoceramics.
I also took part in the Summer School on "Advanced Characterisation on Electroceramics," held just before the conference. This was an excellent occasion to explore new techniques, such as advanced transmission electron microscopy and neutron scattering. It introduced me to new methods for studying functional materials and gave me the chance to exchange ideas with researchers from different backgrounds.
I am sincerely grateful to the JECS Trust for awarding me a travel grant, which enabled my participation without financial concerns. The knowledge, experiences, and connections I gained at the conference have been very useful. I look forward to using what I’ve learned in my future research and further developing my skills in this field.
I’m excited to put my new insights into practice!

YCN’s participation at ceramitec 2026 in Munich from 24th to 26th of March 2026, represented a key step in strengthening ties between young ceramic professionals, academia, and industry. Interface Engineering: High-Temperature Interactions Between High-Entropy Ceramics and Metals.
My research explores high-temperature interactions between high-entropy ceramics (HECs) and metals, with a focus on joining strategies for extreme environments. By understanding how metals wet and react with these advanced ceramics, I aim to design reliable interfaces for applications such as composites, coatings, and ceramic joining with functional properties. This work contributes to improving the performance and durability of materials used in demanding industries such as energy, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
