Dr. Azmi Mert Çelik received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Rutgers University, following a B.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering from Afyon Kocatepe University in Türkiye. He received a graduate fellowship, funding, and support from the Turkish Ministry of National Education, The United States National Science Foundation (NSF), and The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) during his graduate studies. After completing his Ph.D., he worked as a lecturer and later as an assistant professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Gaziantep University in Türkiye. During his academic appointment there, he taught core materials science courses, supervised undergraduate research projects, and founded the university’s Materials Science Club to strengthen student engagement with industry and research.

Dr. Çelik currently works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Rutgers University. His research focuses on ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs), particularly boride and carbide systems designed for extreme environment applications. His work centers on the synthesis, processing, and microstructural design of advanced ceramic materials, with the goal of improving their mechanical performance and stability under high-temperature and high-stress conditions. His current research involves the experimental design and arc-melting synthesis of complex UHTC boride and carbide powders.

His research contributions include the synthesis of high-purity titanium diboride (TiB2) powders and the pressure-assisted sintering of advanced ceramic materials using techniques such as hot pressing and spark plasma sintering. He has published several peer-reviewed studies on boron carbide–based composites, including investigations of Si/B doping and TiB2 reinforcement to enhance fracture toughness, hardness, flexural strength, and amorphization resistance of B4C. Dr. Çelik’s work combines advanced ceramic processing with detailed microstructural and mechanical characterization to advance the development of high-performance ceramic materials. He is a member of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), the European Ceramic Society (ECerS), and the Turkish Ceramic Society.

He aims to promote networking, communication, and collaboration among young ceramists and materials scientists in the United States and Europe during his term as a YCN representative, recognizing the importance of these values since the beginning of his academic career.
