Vincent Mika
YCN representative for UK
Ph.D. student at the University of Manchester in the UK
I am Vincent Mika, a Ph.D. student at the University of Manchester in the UK. I am a first-year student in the field of ceramics and coatings, specialising in environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) and bond coats for jet engine applications. EBCs allow for the reduction in emissions in aircraft due to an increase in operating temperature and efficiency. Working under the supervision of Professor Ping Xiao, I aim to investigate the science behind the high-temperature oxidation, phase evolution, and microstructural development of novel and established EBC systems.
Before starting my Ph.D., I completed my Master’s with thesis and undergraduate degrees in materials science and engineering at Purdue University in the USA, working under the supervision of Professor Rodney Trice, developing novel high-temperature ceramic composites as well as completing thermomechanical and thermochemical analysis of EBC systems.
