Joost Guiking
YCN representative for The Netherlands
R&D Technical Specialist at CoorsTek, The Netherlands
Hi, my name is Joost Guiking and I have only recently started my career in ceramics! I am a mechanical engineer through and through, starting off with a bachelor in Mechanical Engineering at the Fontys University of Applied Sciences, mostly focused on precision mechanics. After this period I was convinced that my future would be in the field of robotics. However, during my master in (of course) Mechanical Engineering at the University of Technology Eindhoven I realized my passion was in material sciences and their mechanics. But still, I mostly followed courses in metals and plastics, and I did an internship in (plastic) resin 3D printing at the University of Sydney.
My career in ceramics started with my graduation project, where I researched the effects of the production process on the material composition and microstructure of a zero coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material. This project was a collaborative effort between the University of Technology Eindhoven and ASML. During this project I investigated production processes, created an experimental setup to create reaction bonded carbon fibre reinforced silicon-silicon carbide samples, and performed characterization tests. The biggest highlight of my graduation project was that I was chosen to be the representative of The Netherlands at the Student Speech Contest at the XIX ECerS conference in Dresden! At this event I already met so many wonderful people in the world of ceramics!
Next to my academic and professional career, I am a real people person. I like to say yes to opportunities, connect with people, and organize events! I do this for my friend groups, during my time at the student rowing association, and even now in my work life.
Currently, I am working at the R&D department of CoorsTek, a leading global manufacturer of technical ceramics. I am very excited to be part of the Young Ceramics Network and looking forward to see how we can help each other!
